The dream vision was a useful way for Medieval writers to explore economic, social, political and religious conditions, topics which might not be tolerated by those in power. Dream vision allowed writers certain flexibility to ponder questions of mortality and to reflect upon the inner and outer world and connection between the two.
Readings for this week: (The bulk of the discussion will be on the House of Fame)
Chaucer's House of Fame The beginning, first 65 lines of Book 1 and Book 2 and Book 3
House of Fame, Modern Translation
Selections from Anonymous, The Pearl in translation (This isn't an ideal translation, but you can get the gist of the poem. Read some of the poem in Middle English for its melodic flavor.) Read through to at least pg 19 for discussion.
The Pearl original language
Make sure the version you read is the Medieval poem and not the Victorian erotic tale!
